FAQs About Taking ARIMIDEX

Answers to frequently asked questions for anyone taking, or considering taking, ARIMIDEX. Always speak with your doctor or health care provider before making any decisions about taking ARIMIDEX.

If you are postmenopausal and have been diagnosed with hormone receptor-positive early breast cancer, and have recently undergone surgery with radiation, and/or chemotherapy, ARIMIDEX may be right for you. Discuss all your treatment options with your doctor.

In the early breast cancer clinical trial, the most common side effects seen with ARIMIDEX included hot flashes, joint symptoms (including arthritis and arthralgia), weakness, mood changes, pain, back pain, sore throat, nausea and vomiting, rash, depression, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, fractures,* swelling of arms/legs, insomnia, and headache.

*Fractures (including fractures of the spine, hip, and wrist) occurred more frequently with ARIMIDEX than with tamoxifen (10% vs 7%).

You should also know that:

  • You should speak with your doctor about any bone tests needed to determine your risk for osteoporosis
  • ARIMIDEX should not be taken with tamoxifen or with estrogen-containing therapies

  • Have not finished menopause (are premenopausal)

ARIMIDEX is a hormonal treatment (also called hormonal therapy), not a cytotoxic chemotherapy. It works by reducing the amount of estrogen produced by your body. For more details, see How ARIMIDEX Works.

The dose for ARIMIDEX is 1 small tablet that you swallow once a day. Take ARIMIDEX exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Take your next regularly scheduled dose. Learn more about ARIMIDEX Dosing Information.

Take ARIMIDEX until your doctor tells you to stop. Participants in the early breast cancer clinical trial, called the ATAC breast cancer clinical trial, were treated for 5 years.
